Hello Everybody, I'm alive and kicking ad comes on line for the first tie since Yrunam hit Unawata t 09.20am on 26th. All my family and all the guests were spared as el as m dggie. The house is very badly damaged and needs extensive repairs in the region of 5 Million Rupees. Anyway I live t call it another day. The commotion and terrifying nose drew me into the garden and in no time I was engulfed in the swirling sea water, I managed to keep afloat and hang on t the Tumbergia flower creeper. I realised I need to call for help so I swam int the house and made a franatic telephone call to my Brother in Law, who's he Military Secretary f the Ceylon Army. My wife Hilda,was away for meditation on Poya day [Full Mon] and Imaly my daughter was in Colombo. The whole village is completely destroyed, and the whole place is one dustbin of debris, mud, sand, fallen trees, concrete slabs

Ab Galle südöstlich beginnt die Südliche Riviera Sri Lankas. Das Städtchen Galle, Unawatuna, Kogalla, Weligama und Matara - die Stadt der SriLanka- Diamanten, der Ruhuna Universität und vieler Buddhistischer Klöster.
Nördlich der Küstenstrasse herrscht tropischer Regenwald, wo teilweise noch wilde Elefanten von den Feldern getrieben werden.

Unawatuna liegt im ruhigen Südwesten von Sri Lanka, fernab jeder Bürgerkriegs- Gefahr und hat einen der schönsten Strände der Welt. Sie können nur baden, schnorchelnd die Riffe erkunden, auf Schildkröten zu reiten versuchen, oder mit dem Boot zu den viele großen Riffen mit Schiffswracks fahren um zu tauchen.
(mittlerweile ist dort auch etwas Tourismus eingekehrt)

Asoka Weerasinghe (asoka=heiliger Wald Buddhas=Vorname, Weerasinghe= Löwenheld) hat an der schönsten Ecke im Wald (tropischer Wald) 2min zum Strand einige Zimmer, ein Restaurant in echt uriger Lage am Zentrum der kleinen Bucht- zum Dagobahügel sind es gerade 5 min mit dem Ausblick auf die gesamte Bucht.

Die Nebenkosten sind günstig, aber auch Asokas Frau Hilda macht Curries mit tollem Taste.

Für Individualisten ideal, kein AC
Malariavorbeugung sollte gemacht werden,
Nachts Moskitonetz oder Räucherwerk.
(Privatärzte sind immer vorhanden, Apotheken haben alle westlichen Pharmaka zu Spottpreisen und ein Krankenhaus gibt es im Notfall in Galle) Wer nur Wasser aus Flaschen trinkt bekommt dank der Gelbwurzsoße in fast allen Gerichten nie irgendwelche Beschwerden.

Wer damit leben kann findet ein Paradies vor!

Nicht zu erwarten ist eine primitive Kultur,
Schneefall, dafür aber

große Hitze ( im Winter)

viel Regen in der Monsunzeit um Pfingsten.

Esala ist der Monat Juli im in Singhalesischen Kalender der die Saison der Feste in Sri Lanka einläutet.

Witness the pageantry and pomp of the centuries old enactment of the historic procession of graceful kandyan dancers, drummers, fire dancers. whip crackers, stilt dancers and other artists, the majestic grandeur of caparisoned elephants of thr Esala Perehara of the Temple of the Tooth during the mid of August,

This year's KANDY PEREHARA or Esala Festival begins on July 17th and the final Randoli Perehara which is the most magnificent display of pomp and pageantry will be on 13th July, the Full moon Day. This years festivities will be on a grand scale as its being held after the complete renovation of the colossal damage caused to this scared place of worship of the Singhalese Buddhists by the Tamil terror group LTTE just before the 50TH independence celebrations held two years ago. Wahalkada (Entrance} has been destroyed by the bomb laden vehicle that was driven onto it, and the Moonstone, Guardstones and the other ancient edifices had been destroyed, and severe damage were caused to the Pathiruppuwa, the octagonal Pavilion, Inner court Yard other buildings too.
The annual Esala festival of Wella Devalaya - the shrine on the beach at Unawatuna Will begin on 31th of July and will go on for one week and end with the offering Of Puja to the deities and alms to the devotees.
The auspicious days and times for the festivities at Kataragama has not been announced as yet, but are likely to he held in July prior to the Full Moon day . Highlight here is the Fire Walking ceremony where hundreds of devotees thread on burning embers with bear feet in supplication to God Skanda seeking his protection and benevolence.

The festival at Devinuwara or Dondra at the south most tip of the island, just outside Matara, at the temple of Sri Vishnu would also take place around this time, and will be followed by the perehara at the ancient Seenigama Devalaya situated on an islet just outside Hikkaduwa in September and the grand festival at the Saman Devalaya in Ratnapura as well as Getabaruwa near Morawaka on the road to Deniyaya.
