Kiwi-Chimp Venture past trips - nepal On top of the world
Accommodation was easy to find, every village had its collection of tea huts and small hotels. Some with solar hot water systems, some with a sign advertising hot water but yet to install the water boiler. One day we sat watching the world below us, when three boxes came along. 1 m by 1 m by 2 m, it looked so funny. These boxes with legs, what can it be ?? 10 bed mattresses being carried up on the back of the match stick men. Incredible!!! some Village appeared Gothic, others resembled Western Cowboy town, but all had prayer wheels at start and finish. Some just three some one hundred and one, but never an even number. We spent one night in the "Dorchester", quite little place, no electricity and a toilet across the rice field. Another night in a German Bakery, where you could get the best coffee and chocolate cake. The Himalayas have it all! Along the way friends were made, some trekkers and other peoples guides. What a laugh, cards around the fire, queuing for the possible hot shower or just sharing a rest spot along the way. Its quite clever what these locales can make from nothing. It was soon our turn to go over the top!! Thorung La Pass 5.416 Meter high "D'Day", up at 4.30 in the morning, on the hill 5.30, after our morning bowl of porridge with Yak milk, the steepest climb yet, cold and dark, almost as bad as some of the many land slides we had to negotiate up and up. We went then there, the top and what a view. Clear clear sky, snow, a place to dream. From now on down hill all the way. So the book says! It was almost 1600 meters down in 5 hours. Steep steep ....ouch ouch... our carves, toes, only used to going up. The other side was different, different religion, different people and more tourist, but still, Nepal "The Land of never ending peace and love" Some of the down's were steep some flat and some up! But we were on the way back a little happy to have made the worlds highest pass crossing, a little sad to be leaving but life was still going on in the valleys and we wanted to join in. Poon hill was the last place to glimpse the sun rise over the snow capped mountain, then the smog filled valley claimed us back once more. ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT............ A HIGH LIGHT OF 19 MONTH TRAVELLING.... WITHOUT A DOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ==
