Kiwi-Chimp Venture past trips - australia Cairns (Queensland) to Cooktown - Juli 1998 Well what a journey we have just come back from cook town nice place quite almost boardering on backwards. The road we took up is called the Bloomfield track? Track is to kind ok at the start there was a sign saying 4wd only we got out checked we still had four wheels [if you do not count the two spares] so we drove. But first we consulted a few people coming back and they all said bloody steep hills slippery and all praised their 4wd' so off we set not really knowing what we had started or who was going to finish it. The fords weren’t too bad we just walked them first the hills were as told steep she [the car] started well all six cylinders remembering their orders then up up up pppp around the corner and more up's she was failing fast shit and no sight of the top yet we managed to change drivers on the move without the loss of any of our now rappidly failing forward motion I'm now lashing the car in between filling in for any cylinder which has chosen to take untimely leave [pushing a ford station wagon 4.1 ltr full of all collected controban up a big bloody hill whilst on holiday ain’t funny] we made a rest stop in the middle of the road well when the engine decides to stop it stops and so do you. A kind soul going the other way gave us a tow over to the side tried to jump start her but failed [can’t scare her she’s too old seen all the tricks] so we sat and dreamed [4wd] I then did some much needed maintenance set the points with the aid of mk1 eye ball add pocket knife' battery now flat can’t even listen to our fav tape so again we sat until we could catch some poor bugger for a jump. [fanar fanar] Yahoo we got one and with a little help from direct injection we were away up we thought about a quick turn about but that’s no fun, eh? I mean not like where in the middle of some rain forest with failing light crock infested rivers[ they can do 45kph on land]???It was tough we began to fill a little foolish still what the hell, eh?
The net hills were ok-ish the fords came and went until number four splash slish and there we sat no engine but plenty of water again we played at being an engine [brooombrooooom] then luck came by a truck load of abbo’s back from a fishing trip they towed us up and out of the water which made the old car happy and she burst into a 5 cylinder course we the spluttering number 6 on backing cords [good enough for us now we understand why we have so many] jungle juice is now getting low our jerry cans all ready used how long is this bloody track? The locale abbo’s have a kind of village but its sunday and all is closed how ever down the road is another shop which should be open?? How far we aren’t sure. Again luck has it a couple of Dutch blokes [merchant bankers one gay] who had heard a 4wd also needed fuel and we agreed to travel in convoy from now on the road was plain sailing just your average dirt road up a hill. Cooktown,
we have arrived wet tired but happy the locals found it amazing that a
23 year old ford with slipping automatic transmission even attempted the
track and made it. Our two Dutch friends wished to hear all our travel
so invited us for dinner in the best hotel in town and paid the lot. The
return was not so eventful there’s an inland tourist road we took this once is enough!!!!!!!!!!!
We now go west via the dirt track to Darwin
