Riga
Riga is the Baltics biggest city, apr. 1.000.000 inhabitants while Latvia counts only a bit more than 2.000.000. Named after a river which ran through the city, it has been owned by German knights and the Swedish king, in the end of the 19th century to 1940 rich and prosperous people built around the old city, 5-6 floor building in Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil). Riga has been called Paris of the north!
On Thursday 21st of August I went from Tartu to Riga, through the border city Valga/Valka. In the soviet times many towns in the Baltics got to have their own giant sign and Riga got the biggest! Many things which reminds you of the soviet time have been taken away, but one thing which wont be taken away is a sign like that, it still serves is purpose to make the inhabitants proud! Welcome to Hollywood
The time in Riga was wonderful! I stayed at my friends place Bruno at Elizabetes iela in the center. Here you see Bruno in his kitchen!
Bruno and his friends frequently go to a bar called Karamba near Elizabetes iela!
Then sometimes to a club in Vecriga (the old town). Here I am with Zilgalvs the king! LABI
Riga is truly a wonderful city, here is the Blackheads building which was build from the scratch and finished 1999! Some people say that doing all these renevations in Riga was wrongly put on the top of the prioritiy list, they should have done more necessary things first, like fixing, the welfare system, education, cultural things like the national library etc.
One of the necessities for a young and innocent boy from a north-atlantic island where no strange animals live is to visit a zoo. And Rigas zoo is everything a young innocent boy dreams of! Kur ir zooparks?
Always interesting to see an elephant!
Curious little creatures I dont even know the name of!
They didnt look as scary as meeting them in the middle of the forest trying to be nice to their baby!
My favorite hobby in every country is to try out their libraries and than make out of it a study in comparative library science :) In Latvia I wanted to learn a bit of Latvian so I went to the National Library, they are still running an old Russian system and without computerized data, but the librarians were very nice and helpful and eventually I got my books!
Rigas survival kit, Riga is big and a ticket in the tramps or the busses are vital for long distances!
