Role-playing can be described two ways - "improvisational acting" and "let's pretend" with rules.
RPG's are actually very simple; there is not usually a visual representation to work with (unlike most board games), the visual representation is based on the limits of your imagination. They tend to allow for a lot of creative freedom. This freedom is shared on the part of both the players and the game's referee.
The "classic" role-play involves character interaction to an environment created by the referee. Locations, people, plotlines - all orchestrated and designed by the game's ref. In the "classic" role-play, most characters are required to cooperate in some manner for a common cause or goal.
Here's where the RPG sponsored by the Dojo differs. You can make your alliances as you please, interact with certain characters, or completely ignore them. It is a very free-flowing scenario. Do, however, keep in mind that some RP occurences will have an impact on your character.
Also remember, that - in many situations - the referees have final say almost 100% of the time. (But- We don't abuse that power.)
