New England
The Spiral Shop
On to Vermont. We were traveling across lower Vermont going from Brattleboro to Bennington on Route 9 when all of a sudden Barb said, "Turn the van around, we have to go back and check this out!" What she had seen was an incredible array of sculptures around a pond and in the woods near a small house. The sign out front said, "theSpiral Shop" and it turned out to be one of the most interesting art galleries we had ever visited and introduced us to some wonderful new friends.
Harold
The owner and squire of this unique art center is Harold Makepeace, a retired university professor from Boston. Harold takes pride in being know as someting of an eccentric and in helping artists display and sell their art. Smaller pieces are available in a shop contained in his home. Larger pieces, some made by Harold and some by others, are scattered all over his property, including along a trail though the pine forest behind his house.
Sculpture tour
This interesting sculpture of a flock of birds fit in very nicely next to Harold's Pond. The next few picture will attempt to show some of the variety in his collection.
Figures
This sculpture of a group of figures on the ground strikes people as somewhat grotesque at first, but as you look at it longer and from different angles, it is very interesting.
