Reggie Deal's Home Page
Become more comfortable with blindness. I intend this to be a resource to educate, inform, and bring comfort and encouragement to all who know of, or might encounter, someone who is blind. Yes I am more than willing to field questions.
I know in creating this area of my site that many different things may have brought you here. Maybe you are just curious, maybe you are a parent, a teacher, or you have become friends with someone who is blind. Notice I use the term blind because I feel that someone visually impaired is just that, meaning they have some level of useful vision. I am not at all a blunt person, but PC (Political Correctness) is more harmful than good. I have found that more people worry about saying something offensive (such as saying I watch tv) not realizing that I use the term regularly though I obviously listen to the TV. I am never offended by what you say and I feel that is true for most blind people or for that matter those of other disabilities. So I hope that by reading my thoughts here and seeing what some related sites offer, you can be more understanding of one important fact, a person who is blind has with them a trait that is just like your skin, eye color, hair color, weight, and height as a trait we all have. I choose to see blindness more as a feature unique to a portion of the world's people for various reasons. I will go into that more on the page that tells my life story. I hope that the information I linked here is of great help and use for you, no matter what your purpose is here. I will add more links to this section as I learn of them on my own or from others who visit here. I encourage you to visit American Council of the Blind, American Foundation of the Blind, and The National Federation for the Blind. Also check out The Dallas Light House for the Blind
There are two links you can check out to learn about products computer related, I will add more as I learn of them. Visit IBM. Click the IBM link which will take you directly to there site for products made for accessibility. There you will find Home Page Reader It is a tool that works like a web browser with speech for the blind. Also a company called Freedom Scientific makes a product called Jaws for Windows and it is a windows based screen reader that works with some though not all word processing, spread sheet, and other applications. Also, if you know someone who needs a replacement cane for traveling, talking products like thermometers, and a variety of other useful products designed for the blind, visit Independent Living Aids for useful information.
IN the United States, find out which government agency in your state or U.S. territory assists the blind, by visiting the web page hosted by the National Council of State Agencies for the blind.
In Canada, visit agency Canada which has links for various disabilities including blindness related organizations for each province and territory.
IN Australia, visit Vision Australia for a collection of blind agency and related links.
If you know of any useful link that should also be on this page, please send me an email.
