Poetry & Song How
Old is Anson? Hyder Ali, The Sporting News, 1897 The man who called himself Hyder Ali had actually written a very long poem on his all-time favorite player Adrian "Cap" Anson. Two of the the most famous are below. When the poem was written, Anson played his 22nd season; he went on to play professional baseball until he was 44.
(does
anyone have the rest of this poem?)
How
old is Anson? No one knows. I
saw him playing when a kid, When
I was wearing still short clothes, And
so my father’s father did; The
oldest veterans of them all As
kids, saw Anson play baseball. How
old is Anson? Ask the stars That
glisten in the hair of night When
day has drawn her golden bars To
shut the sunbeams from our sight; The
stars were present at his birth— Were
first to welcome him on earth.
