Cubs History

 

> Cubs team nicknames (most were given by the press):

 

White Stockings 1876 - 1889  the first dynasty: winning six pennants
Black Stockings 1887 a year later they called themselves Black Sox, but the name was not official
Colts 1890 - 1892 when the player's league was formed many young players replaced the veterans
White Colts 1892 - 1895 switching back to their old team color: white
Anson's Broncos 1896  A fad. Just a passing fad.
Orphans 1897 - 1901 a name they adapted after manager Cap Anson was fired
Spuds 1899 the name was given after in 1997 they finished 9th but seldom used
Cubs 1900 - today  though first playing as the Cubs in 1902, the press started the name in 1900

 

Also several names appeared during Spring training and season play:

Rainmakers (when games were rained out in 1898) - Cowboys, Desert Rangers, Rough Riders (while for Spring training in

New Mexico in 1899) - Recruits, Panamas (after a trip to Panama) - Remnants (because many players had left for the forming

American League) - Zephyrs, Nationals, Trojans
