Reed family members are descendants of Russell H. Reed & Charlotte (Radford) Reed-- Ruby, Ralph, & Grace did remember meeting Russell; many remembered meeting Charlotte; when asked to say something they remember about them, several offered memories (see below.) On Sep. 11, 2001, the day of the attack on the U.S., no one at the reunion was in New York City, Washington D.C. area, on an airplane, or at an airport; many remembered hearing about the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor on the radio. People from 7 states were recognized. People who traveled farthest: Eloise & Merle; shortest distance: Hazel Gelhaus (3 miles.) There were no toddlers when it was time to eat, so Hazel had senior citizens line up 1st after she lead grace. When people arrived, the back door was locked, so they sat around the gazebo; after John got there, he rounded up the key; the front door of the shelter, though, was already unlocked. Ruby remembered when she was very young that her dad was going to see his dad, Russell.H. Reed. Ruby wanted to walk with him through the snow, but her parents said no. She insisted & they let her. She walked behind him & hung on to his back pockets, walking in his footsteps. Ruby's grandpa was so glad to see "Little Ruby," & he gave her a red sled. He died within 24 hrs. Ralph remembered when Russell & Charlotte of Minnesota spent winters with Reeds in Iowa. Charlotte's kids didn't want her to go up her son Earl's steps, so she stayed at her son Lloyd's place. She couldn't stand to drink milk--it made her sick; she used a lot of coffee-like Postem. She also ate a lot of liver because of a heart problem. |
