Steve Yzerman recieve much critizism from a good deal of Detroit fans about how he sold out the team. At the time, the Wings were down 2-0 to the Vancover Canucks in the first round, and Yzerman had a bum knee that might have been worsened by the Olympics. Nevertheless, Yzerman ignored the critics, and skated on. He posted the best numbers of any Wing through the first two rounds of the playoffs. He was challenging Sakic for the league lead. The Wing made it through the first two rounds to play the Arrogance in the Western Conference Finals.
The first 5 games were classic, the Wings were a little worried when the Arrogance had a chance to close out the series at home, leading the series three to two. That didn't happen, in fact, after the fifth game the Arrogance didn't score another goal. The Wings shut them out 2-0, then in game seven at home, the Wing destroyed the Arrogance and Waaahhh (Roy the Statue of Liberty Goalie), 7-0. The Wing then beat the Carolina Hurricanes in five games to bring the Cup back home. |
