| 1) Soak bedding overnight
in water. Drain until just moist. |
| 2) Meanwhile, drill
several 1/4- to 1/2-inch holes in upper sides of box for ventilation. |
| 3) Notch edges of
hardware cloth by cutting a 2-inch square out of each corner. Make
a 2-inch fold in each edge, then place hardware cloth inside box, cut edges
down. It should form a platform that stands about 2 inches off the
bottom of the box, making space for ventilation and drainage. |
| 4) Place filter on
hardware cloth to keep bedding in place without blocking movement of air
or water. Pile about 3 inches of bedding on filter, then put worms
on bedding. |
| 5) Put lid on box.
Let worms dig in in for about 10 minutes. |
| 6) Remove lid. Place
a 1-inch layer of kitchen scraps and other "good" food (about 3/4 to 1
pound) in box. |
| 7) Cover scraps with bedding
to reduce any odors. Cover bedding the brown paper to retain moisture.
Put lid on box to help protect worms from light and excess moisture. |
