Anyway, I watched Brad practice for Salt & Light on Sunday (the 6th). I walked home and was having very mild contractions. I didn't think much of it since I'd been having them off & on for weeks. The contractions continued through the night but never did get regular of painful. About 5:30 a.m. Skylar woke up. I got up and brought him in to bed with me. I lay down and with the next contraction I heard/felt a little "pop". Nothing happened, so I wasn't sure what it was. My water had never broken with the other kids and nothing came out so I just ignored it. Shortly, we got up and in the bathroom I had a small trickle of clear fluid. I decided it must have been my water that broke and that the baby's head was keeping it from leaking out.
I packed up my bag, and worked to finish cleaning the house. I told John I'd broken my water so we'd be having a baby that day but to go ahead and go to work because nothing really seemed to be happening yet. I called my Mom and let her know and told Brad he could stay home from school if he wanted (he wanted to be there for the birth).
I waited for the contractions to get more intense but when they didn't I decided to call the hospital and see if they wanted me to come get checked. This was around 9 am. They said that since it was my fifth child and my others labors had been so fast they'd like me to come in. We got ahold of Grandma Jill to take Sky and Paige and John came home and cleaned up. We got to the hospital between 10:30 and 11:00.
The contractions were still pretty painless. When checked, I was at 4cm. dilated. The nurse asked if I wanted an epidural. I said I'd never had one but was seriously considering it this time. Since I was only at 4cm. I decided to go ahead. She asked if I wanted it then or to wait until I was in pain. I said I really wasn't hurting at all and that I could wait. She then suggested that if I waited I might not have time. I said, "OK, give it to me now, then."
