I'M HERE!!!
(AND NOT A MOMENT TOO SOON!)
ALL CLEANED UP AND NOWHERE TO GO!
THE BIRTH STORY

Brayden was due on May 17th but I (Mom) was more than ready to deliver.  The 7th was a full moon and I was hoping to have him that night.  Little did I know we weren't going to wait until night.  Hey, I guess the moon is out in the day whether you see it or not, right?

Anyway, I watched Brad practice for Salt & Light on Sunday (the 6th).  I walked home and was having very mild contractions.  I didn't think much of it since I'd been having them off & on for weeks.  The contractions continued through the night but never did get regular of painful.  About 5:30 a.m. Skylar woke up.  I got up and brought him in to bed with me.  I lay down and with the next contraction I heard/felt a little "pop".  Nothing happened, so I wasn't sure what it was.  My water had never broken with the other kids and nothing came out so I just ignored it.  Shortly, we got up and in the bathroom I had a small trickle of clear fluid.  I decided it must have been my water that broke and that the baby's head was keeping it from leaking out.

I packed up my bag, and worked to finish cleaning the house. I told John I'd broken my water so we'd be having a baby that day but to go ahead and go to work because nothing really seemed to be happening yet.  I called my Mom and let her know and told Brad he could stay home from school if he wanted (he wanted to be there for the birth).

I waited for the contractions to get more intense but when they didn't I decided to call the hospital and see if they wanted me to come get checked.  This was around 9 am.  They said that since it was my fifth child and my others labors had been so fast they'd like me to come in.  We got ahold of Grandma Jill to take Sky and Paige and John came home and cleaned up.  We got to the hospital between 10:30 and 11:00.

The contractions were still pretty painless.  When checked, I was at 4cm. dilated.  The nurse asked if I wanted an epidural.  I said I'd never had one but was seriously considering it this time.  Since I was only at 4cm. I decided to go ahead.  She asked if I wanted it then or to wait until I was in pain.  I said I really wasn't hurting at all and that I could wait.  She then suggested that if I waited I might not have time.  I said, "OK, give it to me now, then."
I got the epidural and was feeling great.  Ione (my midwife) showed up around noon and checked me again.  I was already at 7cm.!  The contractions mellowed out a bit so they gave me some pitocin to help regulate them.  I still felt no pain and only slightly uncomfortable contractions.  At about 2:30 I started getting shaky.  Ione checked and I was fully dilated.  At 2:40 she said I could push.  I pushed like mad (which did hurt, by the way) and in two pushes Brayden entered the world at 2:42pm.  We laughed at his size and how chubby he was.
This was definitely my best  labor & delivery ever.  I was actually able to enjoy the experience. Bradley was able to be there (from a discreet angle) and it meant alot to him.  When I asked what he thought, he said, "Amazing!"

It was just a really neat time.  We had a wonderful nurse and midwife.  Ione had Brad come and take pics of Dad cutting the cord and of Braden being cleaned off (above).  We also took a video, for the first time.  It's something I'll treasure.
