Arts for Recovery is a volunteer-based joint
program of the Verhelst Recovery House and Theatre Degree Zero, committed to empowering and developing expressive skills among at-risk families and individuals. Arts for Recovery bridges the gap between artists and others who have been personally affected by alcoholism and drug abuse (or other substantial issues) and all others in need of an opportunity to find their own voice. Arts for Recovery provides hands-on opportunities for individuals and
families to find their personal, unique voice and to develop creative expression that will assist them in facing the trials they will experience throughout their lives.
The programs carried out by Arts for Recovery emphasize the role of creative expression and empowerment in transcending problems that often seem overwhelming to the individual and family experiencing them. In order to facilitate this
transformation, we call upon many disciplines and many artistic media, including journaling, photography, mask-making, theatre, music, movement, poetry and sign language, among others. With present-day high incidence of substance abuse and alcoholism taking its toll on people, regardless as to family, gender, social status, or geographics, it is imperative that we, as individuals,
and as community, attempt to employ any and all means possible as a method of prevention. The creative arts can be used as a language, as a tool of self-expression and prevention; as a manner of infusing individuals with new social skills, empowerment, and an individual alternative to drug and alcohol use. Although not all of our volunteers are themselves in recovery, all support the process of personal
transformation and the need for creative expression in today’s civilization. We believe that as a society we have been moving away from the heart, and away from deeper truths, and need to reconnect with ourselves, our families, and each other. We also believe that in finding one’s own voice, rhythms, true passions, and deeper understanding, we become more fulfilled personally and better able to cope with constant inundation by external stressors. We believe that the
self-empowerment of individuals is significant and deserves our time and artistic effort. For more information about Arts For Recovery or the Verhelst Recovery House, please contact: Cristi Luna, Project DirectorP.O. Box 4098
