DECO-CONIC by Jofelice SeringI. Objectives: To be able to make a visual aid about the different conics. To achieve a beautiful Christmas decoration using the concepts on conics. II. Description: Conics such as circles, ellipses are to be used as shapes to create a large display of lights or popularly known as the Filipino "parol". Also, this project, as much as possible, will be using recycled materials. It would have a funky psychedelic spice to it to change the usual Christmas parol colors. III. Materials: Any old useful materials such as old clothes(its up to the maker on exactly what he/she wants to use), coloring materials(preferably paint or water color), scissors, pencil, string or nylon, thin wire, Japanese paper or colored translucent paper, translucent tape, old or new small Christmas lights. IV. Procedure: 1. Visualize what materials would go better with your design of the "parol". 2. Gather all the things you need. From the concepts of conics draw first the conics needed and cut out with the scissors. 3. Make 2 large circles from the thin wire and connect the two circles using the thin wire. 4. From there the user can decide on what conics would fit in. But with the design to make that of the illustration use the thin wire as a framework to tape the shapes. Make at least four ellipses with different sizes and this would be placed in the middle. Surrounding it would be the parabolas with an alternating position. 5. Another framework using some more thin wire would be placed outside of the two large circles. 6. Surround the Christmas lights around the framework. Then, tape the cut out conics on the design. Make sure that there would be a small hole for the plug of the Christmas lights to pass through. 7. Make the necessary adjustments on the shape and cleanliness of your work. (Also make sure that the lights are working). 8. Finally, your Christmas parol is now ready for display. V. Applications/Uses: This project is in time for the Christmas season. So, instead of buying those large gaudy parols that might cost you, you can make your own at home with just a few materials, besides, you could create your own designs on how your parol should be. It also is used as a visual aid on the concepts of conics. This could help in distinguishing the different features of each conic. VI.
