De La Soul is the biggest threat to gangster raps image. They give a good old slap in the face to Puff Daddy and N.W.A. Sampling Schoolhouse Rock and Johnny Cash, De La Soul is a kinder, more gentle version of hip-hop. They don't rap about Bentley's and ho's...they rap about life.
Keepin' it real since 1989, they are truly one of the godfathers of rap. The 1989 classic Three Feet High and Rising is still kick-ass by todays standards, with unique beats and a middle-class feel. They didn't grow up in the ghetto, and aren't afraid to admit it. Since then De La Soul has released 10 LP's, and are still going strong.
