The Greatest Canadian - November 31/04
After weeks of waiting, voting, and watching, Canada decided it's greatest Canadian. This woudl be Tommy Douglas. Personnally, I viewed every episode in the series, as well as the debate and finals. I personnally thought that this was a joke, no doubt thought up but the incompetent "yes men" that operate the CBC. The thought of how they can say that this is the country's representation of the best we have to offer is a poor assumption at best. In the top 10, we do have people who would be more than qualified. But since only 1.2 million Canadians voted out of 30+ million. I personnally tried caling right up to midnight and found the lines busy. This was dissappointing, as I was hoping Don Cherry would win. I'll be honest, he's an amazing Canadian, but not quite number one material. David "hypocrite" Suzuki shouldn't have even been on the list. he was more annoying than anything else, and only made us feel bad for breathing and poluting the environment. Ironically, his family owns the Suzuki Motor Corp. in Japan. Makes you wonder. Tommy Douglas may have brought on the idea of medicare, but it was an existing idea in Britan and other countries at the time. So I would say that was no great accomplishment, especially now when medicare is not quite working properly. Terry Fox took an unexpected second. I felt proud when the great Brett Hart put his support behind Terry Fox, and I know Don would have rather had all of his votes go to Terry. He was the ideology of a real Canadian. It's sad when people who I've never even heard of, much less give a rats ass about (Tommy Douglas) can gain admiration, when Terry is only a memory. The fact that he did what he did and never complained, and his efforts are still helping those in need is substantial. He wasn't affiliated with any political group, or with french or english. He was someone we could have all appreciated. Lastly, I'd like to laugh at the fact that Pierre Trudeau is even on the list. He did nothing but divide the country, and make it worse off. After his reign of terror, and then Chretien's reign in terror, this country has slowly gone to poor levels compared to what it used to be. I'd like to comment about his representative, who I wasn't sure if it was Chretien or not when I saw the old goat. I thought he was going to pass out after yelling at the Douglas rep. He appared to be under the illusion that Pierre created the country as we know it( Even though MacDonald created the country, and made things work). It's sad when you have such a looser Prime Minister in the runnings, but it's just pathetic when you have a real french wiener representing him. Overall, I am not surprised by the biased results. It's ironic how they can get away with making one candidate look better than others which the cbc does not suppor. Guess there's no hope for honest regular joes like Don and Terry. but then again, that's just CBC at it's finest.
