Restoring A33 TJN (page 5)
The rear floor joint with the rear axle bulkhead is a notorious rot spot on mk1 & 2 Fiestas
The area around the jacking points under the front seats is another favourite area for corrosion. These areas are relatively easy to repair. It made a nice change to do some simple repairs for once.
The front seats bolt through the floor on their back edges & a reinforcing plate is welded under the floorpan. This creates a double skinned rot spot but the only one affected was the passenger front seat inner rear mount near the handbrake.Exactly the same has happened to my spares car.
The reinforcing plate was removed by cutting the rusty floor away & drilling out any good spot welds. It was then de-rusted & welded back in place before a new section of floorpan was welded over the top.It was all ground down & coated in anti rust primer, not difficult just a bit fiddly.
The handbrake mount has a reinforcing plate underneath also, resulting in rust over the years. The original mount had been previously welded after the area stress cracked. The reinforcing plate is only spot welded on the floor in two places allowing the bolted area of the handbrake mounts to flex & crack the floorpan. As per the chassis rail repairs I cut the same area out of the spares car & repaired it before welding in the whole area to replace the existing "bodge".
