The name Mississippi may come from some Chippewa Indian words "mici zibi." A liberal translation would be great river. No matter from where it comes, Mississippi is a state with a long history. It was admitted to the Union in 1817, seceded from the Union in 1861, and was readmitted to the Union in 1870.
Mississippi retains enough of the old south culture and charm to claim the title The Hospitality State, while embracing the new south progressiveness to become the nation's largest producer of upholstered furniture and, producer of over 70% of the world's supply of farm raised catfish, and be home to the Stennis Space Center, where the engines of the space shuttles are tested. Mississippi's University Medical Center was where the first human heart transplant took place, and the medical center is internationally known for contributions to medical technology.
