| The Salem Witch Trials |
| During the Salem witch trials, a lot of innocent people were executed. It is a common misconception that people accused of witchcraft were burned at the stake. When in fact all of the people that were execututed were either hanged or pressed between two large stones. There were 20 people killed during these times, not including the ones who died in jail. None of whom were given a fair trial until after their death. Most of which proved the accused innocent. They weren't just women either. Men were also convicted, although it was much harder for them. Any man that stuck up for the woman that he loved was also convicted. This is just one of the many tales. One woman, Rebecca Nurse, was convicted in 1692. When she was hanged, her parents took her out of the ditch. They gave her a proper burial place on their family farm in what is now Danvers, Massachsusetts. Several years after her execution, she was found to be innocent. The people that did the convicting were trying to please their God som uch that they lost all conciousness that they were still killing people. When in fact one of the ten commandmants says not to kill. Also, this country was founded on freedom of religion. In fact, the main reason that people came to this country was to escape religious persecution. |
