| The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea between the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico. The Dominican occupies the eastern portion of the island it shares with Haiti. Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic, lies on its southern shore. |

| The climate of the Dominican Republic is a tropical maritime with little seasonal temperature variation. Rainfall, however, does vary seasonally. The Dominican lies in the middle of the hurricane belt and is subject to severe storms from June to October. It experiences occasional flooding and periodic droughts. |
Terrain 
| The Dominican Republic has rugged highlands and mountains with fertile valleys interspersed. The lowest point is Lago Enriquillo (-46 m) and the highest point is Pico Duarte (3,175 m). |

| The Dominican Republic is unusual in the variety of natural geological wonders that are found in and around the island. The country has much gold and silver, ferronickel, bauxite, coal, tin, marble, salt, gypsum, and limestone. The Dominican is also the second-largest gold producer in the Western Hemisphere. Dominican amber mines are famous for producing some of the best fossils and gem quality nuggets in the world. |
