Following the United Nations' realisation in 2190 that war between the United States of America and China was inevitable, a special intergovernmental body was set up to discuss off-world solutions should the worst happen. Project Genesis was the one chosen.
The Genesis Project
7 ships to take 50,000 passengers each, frozen in suspended animation, to another star system. The first 10,000 are to be taken from the Abraham Protocol, the remaining 40,000 from the Jacob Protocol. Individuals of an exceptional nature may be allowed under the Joseph Protocol. See below.
The Abraham Protocol
Under the Abraham Protocol of 2193, 70,000 of the world's foremost scientists, engineers, teachers, thinkers, musicians, inventors and artists are offered the chance of a free pass on one of the planned Genesis ships. 10,000 are to be placed on each ship.
- The limit of genetic diversity of 90% difference is to be upheld at all costs.
- An individual may be exempt from the genetic diversity limit should such an individual be deemed of great importance. See Joseph Protocol.
- It is paramount that each ship receive its full contingent of Abrahams.
- Given the geographical determination of each ship, as many Abrahams are to be taken from each catchment area as possible.
- Should there be insufficient Abrahams in the catchment area, Abrahams from neighbouring catchment areas are to be used, only where this does not break genetic diversity limits.
- Obvious differences in ethnicities are to be avoided where possible (For example; a black African-Caribbean individual with no knowledge of eastern Europe would not work well on Apollo), only where this does not break genetic diversity limits.
- Unless the individual is of exceptional usefulness, no individual under the age of 20 is to be included.
- Those with any mental difficulties are not to be included. This includes learning difficulties. Exceptions can be made should such an individual possess qualities deemed useful. See Joseph Protocol.
- 9,000 of each ships contingent of Abrahams are to be 3,000 scientists, 2,000 engineers, 4,000 teachers. The remaining 1,000 are to be artists, musicians and other public figures.
- Scientists are to include any scientist or researcher currently considered to be in the top leagues of their field.
- Engineers are to include any engineer, in the private, military of public sector, of at least 10 years experience. Those at the top of their field are most sought after.
- Teachers are to be taken from every educational institution where possible. Of the 28,000 teachers needed, 22,750 are to be teachers of children aged up to 11. 5,250 are to be teachers of adults. There are to be no teachers for ages 12 and above.
- Musicians are to be considered only if they are publically known by a minimum of 50,000 people in the catchment area. Musicians from outside the catchment area are not to be included.
- Artists are to be considered only for their artistic merit on the following; realism, detail, accuracy, honesty. Impressionists and other non-realistic artists are not to be included.
- Public Figures are to be included only if the supply of musicians and artists are insufficient. Given the narcissistic nature of most public figures, only those that meet the following are to be admitted; honest, approachable, affable, genial, transparent. Celebrities famous for no reason are not to be included.
- Unless they possess some quality deemed useful under the Abraham Protocol, no exemption is to be made for 'rich' individuals.
The Jacob Protocol
Under the Jacob Protocol of 2193, 20,000 men and 20,000 women are chosen through careful genetic screening within each catchment area. These are to be laypeople; non-Abrahams.
- The same ratio of Jacobs from each country within the catchment area is paramount, but only where such ratio falls within genetic diversity limits.
- Those with any genetic abnormalities are not to be included.
- Those with any mental difficulties are not to be included. This includes learning difficulties. See Joseph Protocol.
- Criminals are not to be included.
- The minimum age is 20.
- Those over 50 are not to be included.
- Siblings, offspring and parents are not to be included.
- Those with a higher intelligence quotient are more sought after, only where such intelligence does not generate narcissistic tendencies.
- Couples take precedence over singles, but only where their genetic diversity is above the required minimum of 90% difference. Couples are to be included only if they have been together for 3 years or more.
- Pregnant woman are not to be included.
- Infertile women are not to be included, unless deemed worthy under the Joseph Protocol.
The Joseph Protocol
Under the Joseph Protocol of 2193, individuals with exceptional abilities deemed useful to the Genesis Project may be considered provided the following are met:
- Their intellectual contribution to the Project must outweigh the intellectual and genetic contribution of the Abraham whose place they would take.
- Any care they need must be taken into account - should such a Joseph require any individuals for support, those carers must be verified worthy under the Jacob Protocol.
- Such an individual must be rendered chemically and physically infertile.
- The predicted lifespan of such an individual must exceed 10 years.
- The age of such an individual is immaterial and are exempt from the 50 year age limit.
