AIM:
To help foreign learners capable of using standard and formal Indonesian with cultural awareness and fluency for social and profession-related tasks.

CONTENTS:
The course provides instruction in speaking, listening, reading, writing, interpreting and translating in daily and standard Indonesian.

LENGTH:
There are four types of courses: 1 week “goodwill” tuition, 2 weeks minimum to achieve “functional learners”, 3 weeks minimum to achieve “functional working”, 8 weeks minimum to achieve “advanced working” and 10 to 24 weeks to achieve "professional communicator".

The Refresher or Upgrading courses are for non-beginners and length of the course is between 2 and 3 weeks of intensive 6 hours per day. The Refresher course is aimed at improving Indonesian language skills to meet a professional or job requirements. The Upgrading course is aimed at improving mastery in expression and practical grammar. Also, in all courses the participants are free to suggest course topics and emphasis.

For less intensive program the number of hours per day is not fixed, the participants are free to set it. The minimum is 2 hours per day and 3 days per week. Attached is a description of the course.

Suggested maximum of 6 months from beginner to professional communicator.

OBJECTIVE:
The courses cover the following language functions:

Introduction and Identification
Expressing appreciation
Asking general questions & asking for information
Responding to questions, events, ideas, emotions, opinions, values/beliefs
Telling someone not to do something
Making personal statements / comments
Expressing needs and commands
Making / showing comparisons, advantage and disadvantage
Showing sequence and chronology
Dealing with numbers, figures, statistics, costs, dates and measurements
Explaining and showing how something is/should be done
Making advice
Expressing disbelief or doubt
Making graphic description of people, places, experiences
Making direct and indirect/subtle statements (conveying information)
Telling confidence and collaboration
Making persuasion using analogies, quotations and references
Denying something

APPROACH:

The approach is both skill based to emphasize the development of skills and knowledge appropriate to the carrying out of language tasks, maximising the use of authentic Bahasa Indonesia sources.

DELIVERY MEDIUMS:

a. Practical Instruction (face to face instruction)
b. Authentic language sources such as copies of business documents, mass-media article, taped phone conversations, news, video/film.
c. Formative tests (optional, for academic purposes)
d. Written Homework
e. External class activity for observation and interaction (field trip)
f. Cultural and language activities involving members of the community (field trip).

ASSESSEMENT:
They are categorized into two:

1. Two-hourly progress report submitted by the teacher at the end of every teaching period (2 hours), and
2. Conducted at a time determined by the Course Coordinator.
Assessment Tasks for Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.Assessment of student proficiency is carried out to evaluate the student’s ability to fulfil tasks prescribed in the Language Skills Rating Scales.
