Greece
June 2001

Greece is beautiful. It wasn't exactly what I expected. Somehow, I expected to see something out of the ancient times (people walking around in togas, columns and huge structures everywhere) like how your imagination pictures it when you read Homer's Odyssey. What I encountered was a very modern Athens, similar to many International metropolitan cities around the world, and resort islands.

My first stop in Greece was actually in Samos, one of the furthest east islands from the capital. Samos is known for the famous mathematician Pythagorio, whose hometown was on the island of Samos.

Next, we(my travel mate, Holly and I) flew to Athens and met up with our buddy Amy (who was doing the Peace Corp in the Ukraine). We stayed at a hostel close to the Parthenon and on this great little street that definitely made me feel like I was in Europe.

We took a ferry over to Mykonos. Mykonos is a small island known for its gorgeous (gay) men and crazy party scene. The town itself was so cute.

Like most other island towns, the houses were colorful (mostly blue, some green and red.. all white trimmed) and just adorable. I spent my last day in Greece on Mykonos on the beach. Here, they not only partied in the evenings, raves happen during the day too!

Lifestyle: Like Hawaii, there really isn't much to do on the islands but to enjoy the basic pleasures of life: eat, sleep, party and get tanned. An average day on the island starts in the early afternoon when everyone heads to the beach. There, everyone play or catch up on sleep from the previous night's partying. When evening comes, people either disappear into their colorful quaint houses or they stroll around the tiny maze of streets. Dinner time starts at about 11pm. After dinner, everyone is at the bars, having a drink, waiting for the happening clubs to open their doors at 3am. Party all night and repeat the cycle.
