Macro or close up photography is a very powerful technique to take photographs. Macro photography is a fairly hard skill to get used to and takes along time to skill. One thing about macro photography is that hardly any of the photograph will be in focus so you have to be very careful what you focus on. The best macro shots usually have a lot of background blur and are taken at very fast shutter speeds.

Macro Lenses

Macro lenses are special lenses designed for use in macro photography. They usually have very small f numbers like f/2.0 which is ideal for macro shots. These lenses can focus down much closer than a conventional lens quite substantially.

Focal reducers

Focal reducers are special screw on filter that changes the focus on your camera so that it can focus much closer than normal. I have personally found a way you can make your own focal reducer for your lens from an old kids telescope or old binoculars (depending on what lens they use). Of course for professional shots a proper focal reducer will give better results.
