Your current position >> Learn > What to look for when buying a new SLR

When buying a new SLR camera you should first consider a price you want to pay for your new camera and start to research the current cameras on the market. The new SLR market currently has tons of models you can choose from. If you are considering buying on the Internet or just want to see the prices check out the buying guides on the links page.

The things you should look for in a new SLR are:

1. How easy it is to upgrade if you need to in the future or more specifically there upper range of cameras and accessories.

2. The price and quality of their lenses and accessories.

3. Whether or not it has depth-of-field preview. This more than likely wont be on the very cheap SLR's but is something you should consider as a beginner as it is very helpful.

4. What metering modes they use. The common metering modes will be evaluative and partial metering but the more advanced cameras offer modes like spot metering which can be very useful for the future.

5. The weight and feel of the camera. This is one of the most important things, as you will be using the camera more than likely for a long amount of time. The only way you can find this out is by visiting a store and trying it for yourself. Especially if you are buying it on the Internet you should go to a camera store and try it out there. You might even find out that their prices are similar.

6. Opinions of other people who use that camera. These can be found on web sites like those in the links page under camera reviews.
