The Environmental Working Group has created a stir by publishing the names of farmers who have received crop subsidies and the amounts paid to them since 1996 when the Freedom to Farm Act took effect. Elizabeth Becker of the New York Times reported today ("Farmers Abashed, or Irate, Over Subsidy List
") [link probably ephemeral] that the EWG site has had more than eleven million hits since news of the listing became widely known.
This probably doesn't interest the few folks who visit this page, but it's big news here.

Taylor has become more of a presence at the computer and demands to be worked into the on-line rotation. His two preferred destinations are the site that harbors (among other insidiously addicting games) Marbles, and MazeWorks, a wonderful site for puzzles and games.

"I've lived under authoritarianism and democracy," [Dawn's father-in-law] says, "and in both, you're screwed unless you're wealthy and powerful. The only difference I've seen is that, in a democracy, you can complain about it out loud.
"That doesn't mean anyone's actually listening," he adds wryly.
