| Where have the 9 weeks gone? Its hard to believe that we have gone this far in the course. It has been stupidly cold here. The weather reports every morning say stuff like the normal temperature for today is -4oC but today it's -40oC I am not joking about that temp either. It has not been warmer that -20 this whole week. HELLO ITS MARCH!!!!!! So needless to say our coopers run was put off again until next week. I just want to get it over with at this point. We lost Tyner this week. It was hard to see him go but he left with assurances from staffing that he would be brought back as soon as he healed up. The only bonus from him leaving is that we have his bed to flop down on in the morning and at lunch.(sorry Tyner) You cant sit on your bed because its all made and ironed and wrinkle free. God help the person who flops down on my bed at lunch. We had intro to shotguns this week in firearms. I was looking forward to shooting and getting used to the shot gun. Unfortunately we had 2 hours of talking about shot guns and the ammo that it shoots. Great. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz "Oh hello... ya Im paying attention ya the barrel is not rifled." ZZZZZzzzzzzz "um.. what... oh, thats called the safety." We actually got to hold it and practice loading and unloading the shot gun. Some people in the class have never handled a shot gun before but it was still hard to sit through those two hours. At the end of class the Troop got a deactivated shot gun to practice our loading and unloading. We have to be able to do that without looking at the shells or the gun. I had my PDT (police defence tactics) practice test on Thursday. I was feeling confident about it. I have been practising 2 times a week and I did a test in front of a Cpl last week and did fine. But the official practice test was this one. I was told of a situation and had to enter a room and deal with the individual who was in there. When it finally came time for me to grab the person and put him into a hold so that I could cuff him, I grabbed him with the wrong arm. I knew it as soon as I had him in it and there was no switching. I went through the motions of the rest of the test knowing the outcome. At the end of the test I got an N.I.. or needs improvement. It was a little depressing as I know I can do it and have done it. The only good thing to come out of it is that I know what I have to work on and the test was a practice test and doesnt count. It is just to show you what you need to work on. We started boxing in PDT this week. We wear full head gear and a pad on our chest and boxing gloves. But after 40 min of ducking and jabbing your shirt is soaked and you cant see because the sweat in your headgear is dripping down your face. Its definitely a good workout. In APS ( applied police science) this week we were learning the proper way to search people and prisoner handling. That was kind of fun. The troop was split in half. One half of the troop was sent out to the lounge for a coffee and the other half stayed in the class and was given a box full of weapons, simulated drug packets, handcuff keys, jewellry and other small items that might be used to harm an officer or aid in escape. Then after we did our best to conceal the stuff anywhere on our person the other half of the troop had to come in and arrest us, put us in handcuffs, and then do a proper search to find what we had hidden. Its a good thing that we are a close troop because we were being as thorough as we could be. You didnt want to be the one to miss the small jackknife or the snub-nosed gun. At the end of it the people that still had stuff on them had to reveal what we missed. Luckily we found all the weapons and missed some drugs and money off a few people. It was a good learning experience. It really showed you that even if you are being thorough you still can miss something so you always have to be careful. Being that it's Saturday today I have my obstacle avoidance test in about 2 hours. That was the one that we couldnt do last week because the track got too icy. There has been no snow for the last little while so the track should be fine. If I do two clean runs and it looks like I have full control of the car I should get a superior. If that happens I will make a little note at the bottom of this page. If I dont well then I guess I tapped a cone. Week 10 oooo double digits. Almost way. Its hard to believe. We have our midterm exam coming up in two weeks as well as our 1st detachment. Thats where we "pretend" to do a full days work at a police station. We will get a call, deal with the call, make an arrest, if necessary, fill out all the appropriate paperwork and be able to justify our actions. It sounds like fun. A little stressful maybe, but fun. I hope this week is warm... |
