| Where has this year gone?? It seems like just yesterday that I was posting a message on this site with the news that I just received the call to go to Depot. It's hard to believe that exactly a year has past since that day. What a full year it has been. I have now come to the end of my recruit field training and I am just in the process of being singed off. This last 6 months have been busy, very busy. Once I got out of Depot I had to sell my house find a place to live all the while trying to absorb the massive amount of information that they don't teach you at Depot. Forms, paper flow, computer programs. I also had projects to complete for my recruit field training including a community profile among other things. That included learning all the streets and areas in my detachment. If anyone thinks the learning is over once you get out of Depot they are wrong. If anything it gets harder. After I had settled in a bit and learned some of the ins and outs it became a little less stressful but even now I know I have a lot more to learn. It has been a great experience and so far I am really enjoying my job. The night shifts take a little getting used to and there have been a few shifts where I find myself coming home just as my family is waking up. I have been on calls ranging from a bear in the school yard to a marine rescue in the lake. I have been up in the RCMP helicopter to spot outdoor grow ops. There are so many different aspects to this job. It really ranges too - one day you could have a few minor calls and the next the radio doesnt shut up. You really dont have a clue as to what you will be doing from day to day. I look forward to 2004. I hope to be trained on the operation of the boat so that I can patrol the lake. I look forward to a new recruit coming to Lake Cowichan so that I wont be the new guy. All in all this has been a life changing year and really a life changing process. It just goes to show you that if you have a goal in mind you can achieve what you desire. From the moment that I found the RCMP website back in March 2001 and read through the recruiting section I realized that it was now or never. I would decided to chase my dream or just think of it as a dream. This process didnt happen over night and I had to tackle it one small step at a time. The process seems to stand still at times but looking back now it made the final outcome that much sweeter. If you are traveling to Lake Cowichan and you see some flashing read and blue lights in your review mirror smile and say hi. It just may be me who passes you that little blue slip of paper. :-) |
