Mangalore City - A Profile

The headquarters of Dakshina Kannada District is Mangalore. It has derived its name from the Mangaladevi Temple built in the 10th century in memory of famous princess of Malabar - Mangaladevi. Mangalore is also known as “Kudla” which means junction in Tulu. Mangalore being the dist. Headquarters, is liked by air, sea, trains and roads to different parts of the world. Mangalore occupies a unique place in industrial Map for its special brand of ‘Mangalore Tiles’ and ‘Mangalore Beedies’. The cashew export industry is another industry earning valuable foreign exchange for the country. Another industry that has recently developed is the Mangalore Refinery and Petroleum Limited (MRPL). There are lot new large-scale industries coming up such as the Mangalore Power Company etc. The Mangalore Port has contributed greatly to the economy and industrialization of this area. The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company’s Pelletisation Plant and Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers are some of the well-known industries of Mangalore. Mangalore is also a tourist’s delight. The ancient Kadri Temple dating back to the 10th century with its nine tanks, the St. Aloyious Chapel atop Light house Hill with it beautiful frescoes, the famous Mangaldevi Temple, Sultan Battery is a remains of the royal family, the beaches of Ullal, Panambur, Thaneerbavi, Someshwara etc. are some of the tourist attractions. The Konkan Railway is another Milestone in the city of Mangalore, which is helping greatly in the economic development of the district.
