President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
NEW GENERATIONS MONTH
The month of September is designated as "New Generations Month" to focus on all Rotary activities that support the development of young people up to the age of 30. It is the responsibility of each Rotarian to prepare the New Generations - all young people up to the age of 30 - by improving their life skills to ensure a better future, while recognizing the diversity of their needs. All clubs and districts are encouraged to undertake projects that support the fundamental needs of the New Generations: health, human values, education, and self-development. The RI Structured Programs for New Generations are: Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Youth Exchange.
VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENTATION
Our Club, in collaboration with the Philippine Rotary Vitamin A Project will once again implement a nationwide Vitamin A Supplementation Project. The objective of the project is to prevent and control Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) among Grade 1 pupils in public elementary schools through giving of Vitamin A Capsules at least twice a year. We want to create awareness, educate student, teachers, and parents regarding the importance of Vitamin A. On September 13, this Friday, we will give Vitamin A capsule to some Grade one pupils of Malanday Elementary School. I am inviting everyone to join us in preventing Vitamin A deficiency in our community.
DISTRICT GOLF TOURNAMENT
The first leg of the District Golf Tournament was held last September 6, 2002 at Wack-wack Golf Club. It was raining hard, the greens were wet and muddy, and it was really a hard situation but did not dampen the spirit for our Golf Team, the Defending Champions. I congratulate PP Manny, PP Onie, PP Boy, PP Joe Judan, PP Jun, PD Edwin, and PD George for their unwavering enthusiasm despite the inclement weather. With that kind of spirit, I am optimistic we can bag again the Championship Trophy.
DISTRICT DUCKPIN TOURNAMENT
PP Roland, PP Onie, PS Floren, PP Jimmy, PE Dindo and Dir. Celso did not lose heart in the resumption of the District Duckpin Tournament at Farmers Plaza last September 1, 2002 Sunday Morning. I appreciate the dedication of these Rotarians. They will never surrender despite all odds. Hep! Hep! Hurray to our Duckpin Team.

"CLASSIFICATION TALK"
Our classification talk about LPG Distribution was delivered by Rtn Enciong San Juan. He is the Chief Operating Officer and Proprietor of Metro Gas, a vast LPG distributing firm here in Marikina City. He gave us a glimpse on the practice of this business and how he was able to build and expand his empire to what it is now. Hard work, diligence, good faith is what Enciong claiming to have helped him made it. He was generous to have promised discount coupon to any who needs it.
The enthusiastic participation of the Rotarians assigned to our program made our club meeting last Thursday a very lively and interesting one. Special mention is the well-prepared recognition time of VP Kiko. It added a substantial amount to our coffers. Of course, let us not forget those who helped Rtn. Manolo in his showbiz style entertainment time. We had quite a few laughs from the ribticklers PP Roland, Dir. Celso and Dir. Jessie. One of the highlights of the program was the presentation of winners of the very successful Timpalak sa Pagsulat at Pagbigkas chaired by Rtn Ronie. After the presentation and awarding of the plaques, we had the chance to listen to the dramatic rendition of the winning piece. Again the meeting ended after everyone had a share of the raffle sponsored by PD George Ty.
SEMIANNUAL REPORT
All Rotary clubs are required to submit a report to Rotary International regarding their membership status. Together with this report is the payment of dues of the club including the payment for the subscription of each member to our monthly magazine, The Rotarian. For this semiannual report our club will be paying around P75, 000.00 in dues. This is one of the main reasons for the appeal to each and every Rotarian for them to promptly pay their rotary dues. And to those who have paid their dues in time, Thank you.

"FOUR ROTARY PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG GENERATIONS"
- Interact, Rotaract, RYLA, and Youth Exchange - help provide young people with education and valuable life skills to ensure a better future.
Interact
Interact is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people of secondary school age that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and promotes international understanding and peace. The name was created by combining the words "international" and "action." Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs as a program of Rotary International. Rotary clubs provide guidance and inspiration, but the Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting. Clubs take a variety of forms, both single-gender and mixed as well as large and small. The membership base of a club can be drawn from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools from the same community.
Each year, Interact clubs complete at least one community service project and at least one project that furthers international understanding and goodwill. Interactors develop a worldwide network of friendships through exchanges with local and overseas clubs. Along the way, Interactors develop their leadership skills and initiative while meeting new friends.
Through their service activities, Interactors learn the importance of:
- developing leadership skills and personal integrity
- demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others
- understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work
- advancing international understanding and goodwill
The first Interact club was initiated in 1962 by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Florida, USA. Two months later, the first Interact club outside the United States was established in Tanjore, India. Today there are more than 7,780 Interact clubs in some 107 countries and geographical areas, making Interact a truly worldwide phenomenon.
