Valley Wheel Vol. 38 No. 21
President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
The district shall select a nominee for governor not later than January of the year in which the nominee will be elected at the RI convention held immediately preceding the year in which such nominee is to be trained at the international assembly.
Our District Terms of Reference Forum of the nominating committee for the governor nominee was held last Tuesday at Club Filipino hosted by RC Kalookan. PP Roland who is our Club representative in the Nominating Committee for governor nominee for 2004-2005 together with PP Al, PP Ver, PE Dindo joined me in that forum.
The nominating committee for governor shall be charged with the duty to seek out and propose the best available candidate for governor-nominee. The terms of reference of the committee, including the method for selecting members, shall be determined in a resolution adopted by the electors of the clubs present and voting at a district conference.
However in that forum, the committee failed to elect a governor nominee. As stated in the Manual of Procedure section 13.030. Exceptional Circumstances: Selection Through Ballot-by-Mail of Governor: A district shall select its nominee for governor in a ballot-by-mail without the assistance of a nominating committee where circumstances require such action and permission is given by the board. In our next club meeting, I am going to get the pulse of our members as to whom they believe will serve most as District Governor Nominee for 2004-2005.
Last Sunday, our Bowling Team A & B bested seven other teams in the Assistant Governors Cup and Presidents Cup at SM Megamall Bowling Center, respectively. Let me express my gratitude to all our players and supporters. It was fun while it last. It was not a dismal failure but just a short setback on our part that inspired us not only to do better next time but to get back at them with a bang (Promise).
Tonight we are very lucky to have our very own PP Roland Garcia as our CREP speaker. His topic: Organizing a District Conference is most appropriate for him, being chosen by our District Governor to be Chairman of the District Conference for 2003. Let us pay special attention to him, listen very well for we will learn a lot from him for our future use. He is expecting our full support in the coming DisCon 2003 as a host club.

"INTERACT CLUB INDUCTION"
One of the major projects under Community Service C is our Rotaract/Interact program under the chairmanship of PD George Ty. Together with Dir. Jesse Cruz, Pres. Dante and members of the committee, VP Kiko, Rtn Ronie Masangkay with special assistance from Marikina Councilor Dir. Fabi, the group was able to organize the Interact Club of Marikina High School. Last November 21, 2002, during our weekly meeting, the officers of the Interact Club of Marikina High School were introduced to the club and inducted to office by Pres. Dante Verano.
"LIVELIHOOD TRAINING"
Chairman of Livelihood Training program Rtn. Eduard would like to announce slight changes in this weeks training schedules. Instead of Saturday, November 30, which is a holiday, training schedule, was moved to Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 at 2-5 pm. Those interested are invited to come.
"TENPIN BOWLING TOURNAMENT"
The turn of events last Sunday, November 24, 2002 was unfavorable to our bowling teams. The high hopes for Team A turned sour after ending up at 8th place out of 15 teams. Team B showed a slightly brighter future for next years tournament after landing at 7th place out of 15. Practice for Team B resumes at a weekly basis. Those interested to join the bororoy team are requested to enlist to PE Dindo.

"THE ROLE OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL IN THE GLOBAL POLIO ERADICATION EFFORT"
In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio. Since that time, Rotary's efforts and those of partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world, have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide. Rotarians stand at the brink of a great victory and look forward to celebrating the global eradication of polio in 2005, the organization's centennial year.
The World Health Organization launched in September 2001, a Strategic Plan for Polio Eradication, covering the five years (2001-2005) leading to certification of a polio-free world.
To carry out this Strategic Plan, WHO estimates that US$ 1 billion is still needed from donors. Of this US$ New 1 billion, US$ 725 million has been pledged or is expected from existing donors. This leaves a current estimated funding gap of US$ 275 million.
Public Advocacy Efforts: In 1995, Rotary International launched a task force to advocate the cause of polio eradication to donor governments. This task force, later to be part of the Polio Advocacy Group, with additional partners, has resulted to date in more than US$ 1.5 billion in polio-specific grants from the public sector.
Private Sector Initiative: Under the leadership of the Polio Eradication Private Sector Initiative Task Force, The Rotary Foundation and the United Nations Foundation are collaborating in a joint appeal to the private sector, defined as corporations, foundations, and philanthropists, to raise funds for polio eradication needs. Some US$ 80 million in such gifts have been obtained thus far.
Rotary is engaged in one specific coalition; that is the coalition to advocate increased contributions by the U.S. Government to global polio eradication. The coalition includes The Rotary Foundation of R.I., The Task Force For Child Survival and Development, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. Rotary is the leader. Rotary is the leading non-governmental contributor.
