President's Message

Valley Wheel Vol. 38 No. 02
President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
The Rotary Year of our club started with a "baptism of fire" by hosting two very important events, the District Handover Ceremonies last July 1 and the Marikina Zone Joint Induction and Handover Ceremonies last July 5. Both events were very successful and entertaining as well.
The District Handover Ceremonies was an enjoyable night. I believe all who attended were unanimous in saying it was a night to remember. The audience were held to their seats up to the end of the program. It showcased the singing talents of our Rotarians and their spouses led by Sec. Vincent and Sps. Eula, VP Kiko and Sps. Monette, also the dancing couples Rtn. Doy and Sps. Vicky, Rtn. Benjie and Sps. Julie, me and my lovely Sps. Noemi. But the star of the night was no other than our District Governor Efren and District Governor's Lady Pa. Congratulations to District Chairman PP Eric Ignacio ably assisted by Co-Chair PE Dindo Santos who directed and conceptualized the whole event. It was indeed spectacular! Special thanks to all Rotarians and Spouses who lent support to this event in whatever capacity they were assigned. Attendance was almost 100%.
Our Zone Joint Induction and Handover Ceremonies last July 5 did well despite the heavy downpour. There were seventy guests from other clubs. My special gratitude to Sps. Zeny Farcon, PP Roland, PE Dindo for their participation in the program. My warm congratulations to the three newly inducted Rotarians namely Baby Rtn. Enciong, Claro and Jun Jun. I hope that they will enjoy Rotary. To the newly inducted officers of the club, I am counting on your support.
Let us continue praying for the ultimate recovery of our dear Dir. Pons who is greatly missed by the "TAKATAK BOYS."
I LOVE YOU ALL!!!

"MARIKINA ZONE JOINT INDUCTION CEREMONIES"
The heavy rains failed to dampen the evening's spirit. Last July 5, 2002, the different Rotary Clubs of the Marikina Zone held its Joint Induction Ceremonies at The Studio, Riverbanks, Marikina City. What prevailed were the festive atmosphere and the delicious scent of roasted calf as one enters the hall. The ceremonies went on smoothly. The food was delicious and entertainment was provided by Marcy David and His Band. Governor Efren's speech was both inspiring and encouraging specially to the newly inducted officers. The Rotary Club of Marikina came in full force with the following attendees: Al and Bella, Jimmy and Lanie, Romy and Cora, Greg and Dely, Ver, Mario and Rosa, Joe and Fely, Ed and Meldy, Vic and Maring, Ting and Alice, Larry, Jimmy, Gene, Onie and Linda, XC and Doris, Floren and Marissa, Val and Arlene, Bong, Fabi, Claro, Celso, Jessie and Isay, Del, Efren and Pam, Manny and Zeny, Lito, Flor and Vising, Charlie and Nenita, Jun and Zeny, Jun Jun, Manolo, Tony and Elai, Rene, Noel, Nes and Nora, Roland and Marivic, Eric and Lydia, Joe and Minia, Benjie and Julie, Ronie and Liza, Boy and Corie, Kiko and Monette, Danny and Leny, Enciong and Tess, Dindo, Rolly, Vincent and Eula, Doy and Vicky, Abbet, George and Leonor, Dante and Noemi and Edwin.
"RELIEF GOODS DISTRIBUTION TO FLOOD VICTIMS"
The rains continued to fall after the successful Marikina Zone Joint Induction. This brought about the overflowing of the Marikina River causing the flooding of low-lying areas of the city. Evacuation centers began to fill up as early as Saturday. Pres. Dante and Sps. Noemi wasted no time in organizing our disaster team and soon packs of rice, assorted can goods and noodles were ready for distribution. The group immediately proceeded to the different evacuation centers in Malanday. Through proper coordination with the barangay authorities around fifty families benefited from the generous contributions of the members of the Rotary Club of Marikina and the Inner Wheel Club. Braving the strong gusts of wind and rain were the following good Samaritans: Pres. Dante, PE Dindo, Sec. Vincent, Dir. Val, Dir. Celso, Rtn. Doy, Sps. Noemi, Lydia, Vising, Arlene and Doris.

"FULFILLING OUR PROMISE: ERADICATE POLIO"
In 1985, Rotary International launched Polio Plus, a 20-year commitment to eradicate polio. As the polio-eradication program grew, so did Rotary's commitment and involvement. Rotary looks to celebrate the global eradication of polio in 2005, the organization's centennial year.
Rotarians are on the verge of ridding the world of polio. The number of polio cases has declined by 99 percent since Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation made polio eradication the highest priority. But because of the changed priorities following the terrible events of 11 September 2001, it is now clear that without a special effort, governments, agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector will not be able to fill the US$400 million funding gap that threatens to snuff Rotary's dream of a polio-free world.
The RI Board of Directors and the Foundation Trustees have unanimously resolved to introduce a new campaign to raise additional funds for Polio Plus. The campaign, "Fulfilling Our Promise: Eradicate Polio," will last only through the 2002-03 Rotary year with the goal of raising $80 million.
The funds raised through this campaign will be matched or surpassed by funding from the World Bank, the Gates Foundation, and the United Nations Foundation. In some cases, every dollar brought in by Rotary will become a contribution of up to five dollars that will go to governments, the World Health Organization, or UNICEF to buy and distribute vaccine.
