President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
August is Membership and Extension Month. Membership development and extension is the lifeblood of Rotary. It is our ability to recruit new members that will give "new life" to our club. Every Rotarian shares the responsibility to bring and propose new qualified members to join our ranks. Let us help our Membership Growth and Development Committee under VP Kiko, PP Onie and PP Flor in meeting or exceeding our membership goal. The more hands we have the farther we could extend our service to others.
Last Saturday, our Club (World Community Service) WCS Committee headed by Chairman PP Ver Farcon, PP Boy Ong, PE Dindo, Sec. Vincent joined me in attending WCS Forum at Club Filipino. WCS is an aspect of International Service that promotes development and goodwill on a global scale. Through WCS, Rotarians conduct project to improve lives and meet human needs, and thus promote international understanding and goodwill. I hope with the impressive team lead by PP Ver we will continue our clubs WCS involvement thru submission of at least two Project Exchange project.
The first District Activity thru the Duckpin Bowling Tournament will commence this Sunday, August 4 2002 at Farmers Plaza Cubao, Quezon City. Let us give our full support to our Governor Efren De Guzman by attending this Opening Ceremonies. Our team has prepared well for this event, they need our moral support. See you there. Maraming Salamat po and I love you all.

"BOOK DONATION"
Last July 25, 2002, the Rotary Club of Marikina had its first of a series of book donation. It was a rainy Thursday morning but despite the uncooperative weather several Rotarians and their spouses showed up to lend support to this worthwhile project.
Heading the team was Book Donation Chairman XC Alikpala, accompanied by his lovely spouse, Doris. Other Rotarians and spouses were: Loving Pres. Dante and spouse Noemi, PE Dindo, VP Kiko, IPP Tony and Elai, PP Eric and Lydia, PP Boy, PP Flor and Vising, Sec. Vincent, Dir. Val and Arlene, PS Bong, Rtn. Benjie and Julie, Rtn. Ronie, Rtn Claro, spouses Isay and Marissa.
Recipients of the Book Donation projects were Sto. Nio Elem. School headed by OIC Elpidio Ravalo a recipient of our Most Outstanding Public School Teacher Award. The Malanday Elem. School headed by Asst. Principal Felissa Lambus, and the Marikina City Library.
"CLASSIFICATION TALK"
We had a lively meeting last Thursday wherein our Baby Rtn. Jun Jun Farcon delivered his classification talk. He talked about Bakery Product Distribution and true enough, he brought delicious bakeshop goods for the consumption of the Rotarians.
Another highlight that evening was the bombastic recognition time of IP Asst. Gov. Roland Garcia that added almost P 2,000.00 to the clubs coffers. He is one of the few Fine Masters who could get away fining Rotarians a sizeable amount. This is because his fine is commensurate to the recognition he gives to one's achievements and to the honor it bestows.
Not to be outdone was Game Master Ronie Masangkay. Through his innovative game, he was able to lighten up the evening bringing about jeers, snickers and laughter from the group.
"WCS FORUM"
The World Community Service Forum was held last July 27, 2002 at the Club Filipino hosted by the RC of Grace Park. The Speaker was Past Gov. Santi Chua who extensively delivered his talked on the said topic. He proved to be very effective speaker for he was able to in still in us the importance and benefits of the WCS and Matching Grants to various rotary community projects, not mentioning the fact that he delivered 90% of his lecture in flawless Tagalog. Other Past Governors also gave their share of experiences in how to properly prepare and register a WCS project and how to successfully attain a Matching Grant.
Rotarians from our club who attended the said Forum were: PP Ver (our WCS Chairman), Pres. Dante, PP Boy Ong, PE Dindo and Sec. Vincent.

"MEMBERSHIP IN ROTARY"
August is Membership Month. In line with RI President Rattakul's back to the basic philosophy, here are some of the fundamentals about the subject as culled from available materials from the web.
An important distinction between Rotary and other organizations is that membership in Rotary is by invitation. Rotary Clubs invite individuals to join and become members.
Membership is vital to a Rotary Club's operations and community service activities. A primary goal of the club is to continually expand the club with committed members who have the interest and ability to get involved in service and humanitarian projects. Prospective members must:
- hold - or be retired from - a professional, proprietary, executive, or managerial position;
- have the capacity to meet the club's weekly attendance or community project participation requirements;
- live or work within the locality of the club or the surrounding area.
Often a person being considered for membership is invited by a member/sponsor to attend one or more club meetings to learn more about Rotary. The sponsor may then submit the name of the candidate to the club's membership committee.
Rotary uses a classification system to: 1) establish and maintain a vibrant cross-section or representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests among members and, 2) develop a pool of resources and expertise to successfully implement service projects. This system is based on the founders' paradigm of choosing cross-representation of each business, profession, and institution within a community.
A classification describes either the principal business or the professional service of the organization that the Rotarian works for or the Rotarian's own activity within the organization. Some examples of classifications include: high schools, universities, eye surgery, banking, pharmaceutical-retailing, petroleum-distribution, and insurance agency.
