Talking to Miranda

"What are you doing?"

"What do you think?" answered Miranda Shaw as she continued to scribble something on the yellow legal pad.

"You're writing again," I said. I looked over the work she was doing. "What are you writing about now?"

"You and me," came the reply. Miranda paused a bit as she took a sip of her Vanilla Coke. Since it first came out, she had been addicted to the stuff. Why not? It was the nearest substitute to her seemingly hard to find favorite: Cream Soda. That, and it was cheaper too.

I shake my head in disbelief. "It's amazing how you can drink that stuff so early in the morning."

"It's 8:30, my dear," said Miranda. "It's not so early considering we both wake up at 5:30." I shrugged my shoulders. She did have a point.

I read her work as she continued to write. "So, what's the point of writing down our conversation?"

"It needs to get out of my head," she said, not bothering to stop for a while. "You know me. When I get this idea I just have to write it down. By the way, thank you for buying Conversations in Writing. That book is really helping me a lot on the other writing exercise." She was referring to the bit of fan fiction she was writing based on the Harry Potter universe.

"You're welcome," I said. "When do I get to read the finished product?"

"Soon I guess. I had to rewrite the whole thing after I read Conversations. I'm on chapter twenty-one now. But Grace has already posted the first two revised chapters on our website and on Fanfiction.Net."

There was a moment of silence before Miranda spoke up again. "You need this pen and paper, don't you?"

I gave soft snort. "I have things I want to get out of my head too."

"Very well. I'll let you work then." With that, she disappeared.

I read her missive and pick up the pencil. I couldn't bear to have it hanging like that. So I finish the work she began.

Most people find it weird. But for me, it's fun being able to hold a conversation with yourself and your alter egos. I smile and end this piece, looking forward to having another talk with Miranda Shaw. I finish off the Vanilla Coke and begin to work.
