WHAT IS A "BEST BATSMAN"
I think an opinion has to be "formed" on some facts etc etc. First of all What is the definition of "Best Batsman", is it the guy with the best
average, highest runs, most centuries, most double centuries or the guy
with the blazing cover drive, agile foot work, classy leg glance, stylish
hook, the ability to Concentrate and play a long innings when needed Or the batsman who can set the grass on fire when runs are needed in a hurry.
OR do we judge the greatness of a batsman after he has retired from cricket, because then we have a true and a final picture of his gore and glory. It is not an easy answer, but if you look at the current circuit and you look at the top batsmen and apply all these criteria and rate them.........I think Tendulkar will come out on top, now that's an
opinion based on some substance.
What I do find shocking from a man of Barry Richard's stature is that how can he make his opinion based on bouncy wickets, what about making runs on a spinning wicket, If I made that statement I think it's OK but for an internationally acclaimed player/analyst to make a comment like this, for a lack of better word, I think is "Moronic".
I remember when Sir Viv Richards came to Pakistan in 1980 he was nicknamed "Qadir's Duck" because Qadir shot him down with his spin when ever he felt like it, only in his final
innings at Karachi, Richards came back and lucky for me I saw him blast a century in Richard style, but in that tour he was
remembered more for his inability to play quality spin then anything else.
SO does that mean Viv Richards was not that good because he did not make much runs against spin bowling. I guess Barry Richards is implying that making runs against Murali, Saqy and Warne on a spinning wicket is a walk in the park compared to fast bowling on a bouncy wicket....I guess he has seen the light.......Amen brother!!
Yes, I like Saeed Anwar more than Tendulkar when Anwar gets going, I also like Jayasuriya when he is blazing, I loved to watch Richie Richardson in my opinion the sweetest strokeplayer....but the grand daddy of all to me was Javed Mum-n-Dad, forget the stats, numbers, and opinions, to me he represented the ultimate warrior and now the gangster!!
........I love cricket and the wicked "loot"
