Common Questions
- I heard there were concerns about parking spaces at the cabin?
Yes! There's room for maybe four cars at the cabin, so space is a
premium. Right now it looks like two cars are leaving after lunch on
Friday and two leaving around dinnertime. Please try to join one of
these caravans if at all possible.
- When, whom, and how much should I pay?
You should make payments to Michael Poon. The cost is $56 per person.
You can pay Michael at any time up to your arrival at the retreat.
Cost only covers the lodging at the cabin and the following meals:
late-night snacks on Friday and Saturday; breakfast on Saturday and Sunday;
lunch on Saturday. Hiking fees, eating at restaurants, and gas money
are all extra.
- What is our cabin like?
Mountain Side cabin is quite nice. It has 4 bedrooms and 2.5
baths. There's a fireplace, color cable TV, VCR, CD player, full
kitchen, washer and dryer, telephone, and deck. It has 1 king bed, 1
queen bed, 1 double bed, and 5 twins. Counting the open loft, there are
three stories and there's lots of space. I hear there's a stream nearby,
too.
- I'm confused about the bedding arrangements.
Please see the bed assignments
if you haven't yet. Every room is overbooked, so you must talk
with your roommates and decide who will sleep on the floor. If you
take the floor, bring a pillow, sleeping bag, and blanket if you need it.
If you're on a single (twin) bed, bring a sleeping bag or linens for the
bed. Blanket and pillow are provided, if you want to use them.
If you are sharing a bed, contact the person you're sharing the bed with and
work out who will bring the bed linen. You may want to bring an extra
blanket. Or both of you can bring sleeping bags and put them on the
bed. Pillows and a blanket are provided, if you want use them.
- Are we having a message or service on Sunday?
Yes, Pastor Dick is going to give the last part of his topic Sunday
morning. But you do not have to dress up (unless you want to).
We're checking out right afterwards, so what you wear is what you travel in.
- What time are we getting back on Sunday?
We have to check out of the cabin by 11 AM. We'll probably grab some
lunch and then head home, so we'll get back here in the late afternoon (4 - 5
PM). If a car or two wants to stick around and sightsee, that's more
than fine -- just know that we can't return to the cabin after 11 AM.
- Do I have to go hiking?
Although I'm sure most people will want to go because of the beautiful
autumn colors, you do not have to go hiking. You're free to visit
other attractions, stay at the cabin, or do whatever you wish. Please
just let someone else (who's not going with you) know.
- Where are we hiking?
Most likely Grandfather Mountain,
which offers one of the best views in the area.
- Do I have to eat at Woodlands Barbecue for Saturday dinner? How
expensive is it?
No, but if you don't, you're on your own. I have no idea what other
restaurants are in the area, and we're not stocking any dinner-type food at
the cabin. Although I don't have definite figures, I think Woodlands
is around the $12-$15 range. Some items may be cheaper.
- Will there be coffee?
If you drink coffee, bring your own. The cabin has a coffee maker (at
least, it did two years ago).
- Will there be snacks?
Yes, there should be plenty of snack foods, because Nancy is buying them,
and Rob is carrying them.
- Can I suggest a certain type of food for snacks?
We're open to suggestions, but due to timing, car space, and costs, we may
or may not be able to oblige you. However, email
me, and we'll see.
