Numazu, Japan

Numazu is both a very old city and yet a new cosmopolitian one too. It has managed to blend the best of both worlds. It stretches 17 miles along the Suruga Bay. The city lies on the edge of Mt Fuji. The city is rich with natural resources like mountian streams and abundant ocean fishing. The fish market boasts daily catches of yellowtail, horse mackerel and sea bream in their season. The hills are ideal for growing oranges and green tea. With any turn one sees mountians or the bay. In 1893 the Japanese Emperor choose this quiet seaside area for his royal vacation villa. After a short time here a vistor quickly appreciates the quiet beauty and gracious welcome of its citizens. |

The metropolitian areas is large and surrounded by mountians or the Suruga Bay. Property is extremely valuable. Small residential homes are found where ever some space is available. The green square plots are family rice paddies. |

The city has provided a River walk and bike path. It continues along the Kano River for several miles. Almost daily one will see people fishing along the river, single to four man scullers practicing, and walkers enjoying the trail. I have not seen any joggers out. Jogging is not a national past-time as in America. |

From Elephant Mt. you can see across a section of Numazu and into Suruga Bay. This bay is often the shelter for ships to avoid the typhoons coming across the ocean. The bay is a large "C" shape enclosed by mountians on all sides but the opening. It is a natural shelter and great place for fishing. |

Just a 20 minute bike ride from our apartment is the local fish market. Each morning fresh fish is sold to restuarnts, fish stores, groceries and housewives. The man is packng fresh tuna for shipment to other cities. The table above is loaded with fish that I cann't even guest the names, but many shoppers buy one or a bag full of fish here. There are fish, oysters, clams, shrimp and squid. Everything is kept very clean. |
