Indispensible Utilities and Programs
This is the best of the instant messaging programs I have used. It has a pretty confusing web page but can be used for many different functions.
This is an invaluable tool if you spend any time at all downloading files from the internet. Zip Compression is by far the number one standard in their field
This is the file transfer utility that I use. Lately a lot of people have swithched to CUTE FTP, but I prefer the Explorer style interface I have grown accustomed to. There is a professional edition but the Limited Edition is free for non-commercial use and has been up to all of my needs.
I have found numerous uses for the Acrobat Reader. Almost any manual you download on the web will be in PDF format. Any government form or owner manual will likely be in PDF format. Download this even if you do not have an immediate need for it. You eventually will, trust me.
This is a really decent picture viewer that is available for free. For some reason, I don't feel like I should have to pay for an image viewer. The way I figure it, I can see the pictures in my browser so why should I pay for something that only shows pictures? However it is more convenient to use then always having to open Internet Explorer every time I want to look at something. In the past I have used ACDSee and Thumbs Plus, but for my basic needs, this works fine. Plus there are none of those annoying registration notices popping up all the damn time.
Napster was one of the main reasons for the explosion in broadband access. It was amazing to sit down and be able to access any song you wanted in a matter of seconds. All of the songs you listened to and loved as a teenager were once again at your fingertips. However, Napster's primary benefit of having a central server also served as it's death knell. I have tried numerous Gnuttella based programs and right now, this one seems to be the best. Although it doesn't have the amazing breadth of songs Napster provided at it's peak, it does seem to have most of the obscure tunes I always search for.
This is the most amazing program I have ever used. Downloading movies and pictures from newsgroups can be a real bear. Most of the time you need a Computer Science degree just to figure out how to do it. This program makes it simple as pressing a button. It is amazing the things you can find here. A lot of them you will never be able to mention to anyone else ever in your whole life, but it is always worth seeing!
