This book is written in the pattern of a textbook at college or university level and the curriculum has been constructed according to the curricula followed by the leading universities in India. The first few chapters are of shorter length as it takes longer time to master a skill in the initial stages and the instructors may plan their lessons accordingly.
Synopsis
To suit the needs of learners of different levels, the present book is divided into three major parts - elementary, intermediate and advanced. It includes elementary voice training and concepts of beats. Since timing plays a very important role in Indian music and dances, the notations of rhythm patterns also is included in the curriculum. The structures of thirty-five "Raags" are discussed and explained theoretically as well as practically by means of "Sargam", and is illustrated by one or more songs with all their special features. Although this book is not entirely devoted to musical theories, some very important and essential terminologies and concepts are defined and briefly explained. Every effort has been made to ensure the contents to be simple and easily understandable by using tables and chart whenever possible and necessary. Alphanumeric notations are developed and widely used all over in this book.
