ANTARCTICA - JOURNEY TO THE ICE

Adelie Penguin on Sea Ice near Mawson Station, Antarctica

Friendly Visitor...

Most of the wildlife near to Mawson Station is on the sea ice, and consists mainly of Adelie Penguins (above) and Weddel Seals (below). The Adelie Penguins are very inquisitive, and will often walk from kilometres away on the sea ice once they spot you, just to check you out. Like all penguins, they often walk on two feet, making them look almost human like, with big baggy pants on. The Weddel Seals are huge. A female Weddel can weigh up to 500 kilograms. They are very docile, and often can't even be bothered looking up as you walk past them. The Weddels haul themselves out onto the ice through tide cracks or breathing holes to rest and lay in the sun.
