ANTARCTICA - JOURNEY TO THE ICE

Navigation Cane behind Mt Henderson, East Antarctica

Recycling Pole...

An overnight trip up to Mt Henderson in mid February provided much better weather than my previous day trip up there. This cane line marker is not just a place to leave your empty tinnies, it is a crucial navigation aid along the known safe route across the ice plateau. In poor visibility the radar in the Hagglunds vehicles can pick up the cans on the cane and you can use this to follow the safe route. The canes are placed between 20 and 500 metres apart, forming a 'caneline' on all the routes to the field huts.
