The Taylor Rookery is the only Emperor Penguin rookery in the world that is on solid earth (all others are on the sea ice). The rookery is also in a Specially Protected Area of the Australian Antarctic Territory, which means no one is allowed in there. Twice per year, a permit is issued for two people to enter this place for the purpose of taking photographs for the chick count census (summer) and the breeding male count census (winter). I had the extraordinary privilege of entering the area to take the photographs of the chick census on this occasion, something that very few people have ever done. The Taylor Rookery is so named because it sits on the edge of the huge Taylor Glacier.
