Proclamation Point, around 20 kilometres west of Colebeck, is the place where Sir Douglass Mawson and his BANZARE party landed in 1931 to claim what is now basically the Australian Antarctic Territory for the Commonwealth. The brass plaque in the photo is the original, and reads: "The British flag was hoisted and British Sovereignty asserted on the 18th day of February 1931".
