ANTARCTICA - JOURNEY TO THE ICE

Snow Coffin with Bivvy, East Antarctica

That's a funny looking water bed...

No, a snow coffin is not a place you bury someone when they die, it is a trench dug into the snow to sleep in. On our first night at Colebeck, I foresake a perfectly good (and heated!) field hut to sleep out in my bivvy in this snow coffin that I dug for myself. No, I am not mad, it was all in the name of survival training. Actually, it wasn't really all that cold either.
