Helicopters are used extensively in Antarctica for transportation between ship and base, from the base out to field stations, and even between bases in some circumstances. They can also be used to transfer cargo and equipment. The helicopters are taken down to the continent for each summer season, and returned to Australia for the winter. The Aurora Australis has a helicopter hangar and helipad for flights to and from the ship.
