| It's been awhile since I've written in this. We've been busy. In my last entry I wrote about the dark clouds. We did get a storm, but it wasn't too bad. For the past five months we've been cleaning up. Five months of work shows hardly anything. WE have nowehre to put the rubble, so we've been using it. We've made houses with it. Not the best houses, I must admit, but it keeps the weather out. We've used the stone rubble to "repave" the streets. It's not easy. It's hard work, but it gives us something to do. That sick baby died. We knew it was coming, but it still hurt. We're growing desperate. The doctors, all four of them, are checking everybody to see who's stilla ble to have children. They've found thirty so far, only ten of whom are women. I'm one of those ten. They have twenty more people to check. Overnight my status, and the staturs of the others who can bear children, has changed. Over our protests, we have been given the highest status. We are the hope for the human race. Only we can ensure it's survival. We women have been ordered to work at getting pregant. The human race must go on. I've already had one stillborn baby. The thought that I might have another dead one is awful. But we must try.... How disappointing. The power just came on. People cheered, but it didn't last. The people who'd been working on it came out, shaking their heads. The power will not be coming on again anytime soon. Too much has been damaged. We'll have to take advantage of other knowledge. We know how to make fire. We'll have to return to firelight, in the form of candles and lanterns for light. We can hunt for food, and cook it over the fires. We have some animals, which we've captured for breeding purposes. We've had some good success with that, as we've released several animals back into the wild, where they can renew their species much better than in captivity. They've held up better than us so it seems. We'll have to learn. Since we have no choice, we WILL learn. I will go now. Some people just arrived. Because of my new status, I must be there to welcome them. Christine |
