DUG DUG'S APPEAR
ON FOUR COMP CDs IN '03!

Los Dug Dug's have been featured on no fewer than four new compilation CDs this year, proving now more than ever before that the band's music is truly timeless. The soundtrack to the Columbia Pictures-financed Mexican film Sin Ton Ni Sonia includes three songs from the Cambia Cambia album ("No Te Asustes, Es Solo Vivir," "Brillo de Sol" and "Felicidad") as well as "Adonde Tu Vayas" from Pajaro Alberto y Conjunto Sacrosaurio's 1973 Armando Nava-produced album Viaje Fantastico, as well as classic recordings by early Mexican rock legends Los Apson, Los Matematicos, Los Babys, and Los Monjes.

Meanwhile, the QDK Media label in Germany continued its long-running Love Peace & Poetry series of albums collecting rare psychedelic music from around the world by devoting its seventh volume exclusively to Mexican artists and making "Lost in My World" its leadoff selection, marking the second appearance of Los Dug Dug's on an album in this series ("It's Over" appeared on the series' first volume back in 1997).

But most interesting to diehard Dug Dug's fans and Latin psych collectors alike is Avandaro Por Fin... 32 Anos Despues, which finally makes available some of the long-lost recordings of the Avandaro Festival of September 1971. This collection, which was released to coincide with the 32nd anniversary of the festival, includes previously unreleased, extended live versions of "Stupid People," "I Got the Feeling" and "Let's Make It Now." All are quite fascinating to hear, though the performances are marred somewhat by rather poor sound quality and editing. The original take of "Let's Make It Now" also appears on another compilation CD released earlier this year comprising studio recordings by all the bands who played at the festival, and both of these new discs were produced by original Avandaro organizer Armando Molina.

The return of Los Dug Dug's to the silver screen is taking some time to happen, but we've been assured that A Fool's Plan is moving ever closer towards starting production for World Film Magic. As reported last time, the script calls for the band to perform "Al Diablo" live in one scene. Several major Hollywood actors are said to have looked over the script recently (though the company won't say who just yet), so we might just have some big names bringing in the crowds, and subsequently exposing mainstream North American audiences to the music of Los Dug Dug's. Let's hope they don't take too much longer to get it rolling.

In this very special edition of DUG DUG'S NEWS, we are proud to introduce our newest correspondent, Margaret de la Torre Wilkey, who after discovering this website this past summer, was inspired to share her stories of the band's early years with us. Margaret first discovered the band in 1965 on a trip to the legendary Mike's Bar in Tijuana, fell in love with original lead singer Jorge de la Torre, and ended up following them all over Mexico for the next three years.

These adventures, related through several dozen emails sent to this site, have now been compiled in the most amazing feature story we have yet published here, I MARRIED A DUG DUG. It's twelve chapters long and although we originally thought of serializing it, we make no apologies for our final decision to run it all at once. We're confident that you'll find the time it takes to read through it all to have been time well spent, if you consider yourself a true Dug Dug's fan. The link to this special section appears below. Enjoy!

Since the last news update, we have also added a few new items to the LOST DUG DUG'S DISCOGRAPHY section, making this important collector's reference guide more complete and comprehensive than ever, and upgraded the sound samples section to the increasingly popular streaming MP3 format. Check 'em out and let us know what you think.

Finally, Armando Nava claims to be contemplating a move to the United States within the next year -- possibly Miami, he says. We'll keep you posted.
