German Ties with Namibia in the Present
* Namibia by far maintains the most numerous ties with Germany and German culture of all African countries.
* German is spoken by a substantial ethnic German population, although it is not an official language. Namibia is the only African country to possess a newspaper in the German language. Several private schools also exist which specialize in the teaching of German.
* Tourism is widespread in Namibia, especially from Germany. In a country relatively scant in natural resources, it has evolved into a major industry.
* Of all countries, Namibia receives the highest amount of per capita development aid from Germany, which is directed toward vocational training, irrigation, and anti-corruption initiatives.
* Herero tribesmen today are demanding extensive reparations for the alleged 1904 genocide. The German government refuses to exclusively favor a particular ethnic group (especially one whose present members have not suffered from the genocide) and instead seeks to direct assistance toward the entirety of Namibia.
* The primary mode of transportation of tourists to Namibia is the airplane. Air Namibia, which maintains the majority of its services in the German language, offers a myriad of travel packages. Most of them involve a departure from Frankfurt to arrive at Windhoek International Airport and tour the country by rail. It is also possible to purchase a South Africa-Namibia tour, wherein one would journey from Capetown to Windhoek and back by rail. Pricing and contact information is listed on the company's website at
