| Victor The Vulture... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A true Story.... A couple years ago we were driving to Nanaimo and I saw a vulture circling near the road as we took an the northfield exit. I said to Dale ...."Look theres a Vulture" He began to laugh, I was suddenly very embarrassed. "There are no vultures around here" he said. Well I was so embarrassed that I shut right up and didn't even look up again. I figured that my all knowing woodsman/hunter/fisherman husband would surely know what he was talking about, right? Normally when I wanted info about something I would go straight to the internet and look it up. But not this time. I never wanted to hear the word vulture again. Now in my husbands defense he is a pretty good guy and wouldn't trade him for the world. But he NEVER let me forget how dumb I was to have thought I saw a vulture over Vancouver Island. Every chance he got he would poke me in the ribs and say "rememebr when you saw the vulture?' Laughing the whole time. He was outright mean about it. I had gotten to the point that I had forbiden him to even say the word vulture. |

| In July 2003 we went to Birch Bay State park, We had gone to camp and meet up with our good friends Mr and Mrs Bean. It so happens that we were there during Birch Bay days which featured among other things a craft fair. As we strolled the grounds we happened upon a crafts man who had made sculptures out of rocks and seashells. Sculptures of VULTURES. I instantly hated this man and hoped Dale would not notice these things...but he did. He of course teased me about them and I made him be quiet, I didn't want the Beans to know how dumb I was. |

| And then it happened...... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| That evening we went to one of those camp fire chat presentations. Us along with the Beans and our sons. that nights presentation... "Raptors of the Northwest" That man went on and on and on, it was soo boring it was actually painful. If we could have left without appearing to be rude we would have. And after what seemed like days he finally came to the slide presentation. The very first slide to appear was that of a Turkey Vulture. As I am sliding down in my seat to hide my face and I hear Dale giggle at the oppourtunity to tease me yet agin, it suddenly occurs to me we are watching a presentation about birds in the northwest.... I wasn't really listening but I could swear the guy said something about Vancouver Island. Well when that slide show was over I was on that gentleman like a fly to flypaper. He confirmed for me that YES there were Turkey Vultures in the Northwest and that included Vancouver Island. It was with GLEE that I told this story to the Beans and with even more glee I demanded an apology from my Husband, which he gave. Best part was, once we returned home and I began telling the story to people ( now that I was no longer shamed into silence) Almost everyone said.."Oh yeah we see vultures all the time" including Dales own parents. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A short time after we arrived home from Birch bay a package arrived from Mrs Bean. She had found a stuffed friend that she could not resist sending us. |

| In the package we found Victor the Migratory vulture. Or so the paper said. The first thing he did when he got loose from the box was fly over and peck Dale on the head for being so mean to me. Mrs Bean called him Migratory because he was coming from her in Washinton State to Us on Vancouver Island. We decided he should always be migrating. |

| Now Victor sits by our front door, he goes EVERYWHERE we go and he almost always has his picture taken either by a land mark, with a new friend or just hanging out. |
